Chicago Tapes: 5 Frequently Asked Questions
1.
How do I get involved with the Chicago Tapes Project?
You can become a part of the Chicago Tapes Project either by leaving a tape
at an existing tape station or one that you start on your own; or by finding
a tape in a tape station.
2.
What if I don’t find a tape at a tape station, or someone takes takes
my tape but doesn’t leave one behind?
That’s part of the nature of the project, which is an anonymous, public
audio exchange. Anyone who was curious enough to discover your tape probably
deserves to have it whether or not they are able to further participate in the
project. Consider it your contribution to the art gift economy - you’ve
made the streets of Chicago a better place and we thank you for it.
3.
Do I have to use tapes?
In short, no - not everybody has the resources to produce or listen to cassette
tapes. However, we chose to focus on tapes for a few reasons. One is that they
are good for a low-budget, do-it-yourself project, because they are recyclable
and bountiful. Tapes are surrouded by an established culture of sharing. They
are also easily altered (inside and out) and turned into art objects. In whatever
media you choose, just remember to make something special.
4.
So then can I use videotapes or DVDs?
Uh...great idea. Run with it. We can't stop you.
Can
I start a Tapes Project in my own locality?
Yes, of course. That’s exactly what we hoped would happen.
